Changing the session timeout for BIP in EM12c

Someone asked me if it was possible to change the BI Publisher session timeout for Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.  To which I said of course you can if you want to hack your way through the deployment, you can do what you like, but that doesn't mean the changes you make will be supported or endorsed.

They pointed me at My Oracle Support article "BI Publisher Consolidated Reference (Doc ID 1546377.1)" which contains a section for BIP version 11.X that comes with EM12c.  The instructions contained within that note talk about extracting the xmlparser.ear and the xmlparser.war file and then changing the session-timeout value in the session-config section of the web.xml file and packaging it all back up again, now I know it's been a long time since I was messing around with deployment descriptors but I thought to myself there has to be an easier way.  The JEE spec allows the receiving container to override certain values during deployment of applications, Weblogic Server is no different.  You would normally package up a weblogic.xml file containing it's own session-descriptor but it's too late with EM12c as the application has already been deployed.

There still has to be an easier way I thought to myself and there is, simply use the Weblogic Admin console to change the value after you have installed EM12c.  Follow the instructions below.

1. Log on to the WLS Admin Console, usually found at https://yourserver.com:7101/console using the weblogic account.
   
2. Click on "Deployments" followed by "bipublisher (11.1.1)" as shown below.
   
3.  In the next screen click on the Configuration tab, then the "Lock & Edit" button and change the value of "Session Timeout (in seconds):" then click "Save"
   
4. Now go back to the "Deployments" page and tick "bipublisher (11.1.1)" and then click "Update".
   
5. On the next screen keep the defaults and simply click the "Finish" button.
   
6. Finally you need to activate the changes.
   
7. You can validate that the changes have taken affect by navigating to "Environment -> Servers -> BIP -> Deployments -> bipublisher (11.1.1) -> Configuration" and you should see your new value for "Session Timeout".
   

How to install Oracle 11gR2 Enterprise Edition (11.2.0.4) on Ubuntu 14.04

So as I'm sitting in the Goodwood Hotel bar drinking my favorite full fat Latte waiting to hack my way round the Park Course I thought I'd start this blog after my son asked me if I could install Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu 14.04 for him.

Ubuntu 14.04, I laughed, get a free supported enterprise quality Linux distribution I told him. Alas his service provider didn't offer that option so I've had to hack my way trough the process.

I've found lots of good references to installing Oracle XE in Ubuntu 12.10 but nothing about 14.04 so hopefully this will provide you with some pointers.

Remember that I said hack this is truly that, I'm sure there are steps in here that are not necessary but I'm revisit the process after I've finished 18 holes.

So let's set the scene; this is the starting point of the VM that was provided by OVH.

Next install libstdc++5;

and create some links for 64 bit libraries (this might not be necessary, yet another hack I need to verify);

Oracle 11gR2 needs gcc version 4.4 so fix that;

Now do the usual Oracle stuff for users and groups (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24324/toc.htm#CHDIDEFH);

There are a bunch of symbolic links that are needed as Oracle expects some files in a different directory;

Now we're almost ready to get going.  We just need to get the software for which you'll need a My Oracle Support Account.  11.2.0.4 is actually a full install patch (13390677) and if all you want is the database and not grid infrastructure or 11gR2 client then you can just download parts 1 & 2 of the zip file.

Once you have both of these files unzip them in the same directory and run the installer.

During this process you will still have to ignore errors on the prerequisites screen. Part way through the installation you will receive an error regarding "Error invoking target 'agent nmhs'...." at this point you need to jump into a terminal session and do the following;

# vi /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/sysman/lib/ins_emagent.mk

and change

$(SYSMANBIN)emdctl:
        $(MK_EMAGENT_NMECTL)

to

$(SYSMANBIN)emdctl:
        $(MK_EMAGENT_NMECTL) -lnnz11

Then back in the UI choose retry.

The installation should continue to the end and you will have successfully hacked your way to an 11gR2 (11.2.0.4) installation of Oracle Enterprise Edition on Ubuntu 14.04.

Finally for those of you that are interested I went round in 2 over net par.

ORA-02379: profile OVMM_PROFILE already exists

If you've ever wondered how one problem leads to the next you just got to do a bit of hacking to find out why.

After hacking around with re-installing Oracle VM Manager in a new Exalogic VM Guest, which I blogged about under the title Owned by Another Manager I was forced to uninstall Oracle VM Manager which is where I hit this problem.

To cut a long story short I was installing Oracle VM Manager 3.2.8 into an existing Oracle Database which had already had an OVS schema installed into it and for a change I had removed it using the officially documented de-installation process available at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35330/html/vmiug-manager-uninstalling.html.  What it doesn't tell you is that it doesn't do the job properly if you have used an external Oracle Database rather than the embedded MySQL one.

After running;

$ ./runInstaller.sh --uuid=0004fb0000010000d1b7eca67025e1c1

The installation got to step 3 of 9 and spat out the following;

Step 3 of 9 : Database schema ...An existing Oracle VM database schema was found.  How should the install proceed?   1: Use the existing Oracle VM database schema with the Oracle VM manager UUID stored in the database   2: Remover the existing Oracle Vm database schema, create a new Oracle VM database schema and use the provided UUID   3: Abort

            ORA-02379: profile OVMM_PROFILE already exists

The solution to the problem is quite simple all you need to do is logon to the Oracle database and run the command;

Owned by Another Manager

It's been a while since I've had to do anything with Oracle VM Manager in my lab environment, mainly because I've been too busy with shuffling emails from customers, who for one reason or another seem to be dragging their feet, nothing new there though.

So back to the problem in hand.  I had an Oracle VM Manager 3.2.8 that was installed on a physical server and I wanted to move it to a virtual machine running as an Exalogic VM guest.  I thought to myself I know I'll get smart and make the VM guest similar to the Exalogic Control VM, after all it is a piece of infrastructure.  After several days hacking round with Exalogic Control going round and round in circles because what I was trying to do was not supported I finally managed to get the new VM on the "EoIB-external-mgmt" network by editing the vm.cfg file and adding the following;

Anyway all of that has nothing to do with "Owned by Another Manager" other than that it happened on the journey.

Knowing the problems I'd had before with my post Server Not Owned By You I decided to install the new Oracle VM Manager with the same UUID using the official documented procedure which is http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35330/html/vmiug-manager-restoring.html.  You'll notice from the link above that the UUID value is specified in uppercase as shown below.

I naively took this to mean that the UUID needed to specified in uppercase so I converted my UUID from 0004fb0000010000d1b7eca67025e1c1 to it's uppercase equivalent 0004FB0000010000D1B7ECA67025E1C1, this was my downfall.

DO NOT CONVERT YOUR UUID TO UPPERCASE.

After re-discovering all my servers they were now presented in the Oracle VM Manager UI as "Owned by Another Manager" so I had to uninstall Oracle VM Manager and start again which brings me onto another issue that I encountered ORA-02379: profile OVMM_PROFILE already exists.

Still working on my Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Plugin and hacking because of the lack of adequate documentation.  After successfully deployed my plugin I made the fatal mistake of exercising the functionality.  My plugin uses SNMP to collect its metrics ad as we all know SNMPv1 is not very secure, in fact it is fast being outlawed in many data centers for obvious reasons.

Being security conscious, as every hacker should be, I thought I'd configure my target to SNMPv3, that was my second mistake with the plugin development.  All of a sudden my agent log files were engulfed with those ever so helpful java exceptions.  Okay so they are always engulfed with java exceptions but these are the ones you're interested in today.

So the background to this is that when a metric definition is defined with "Snmp", and yes that is a deliberate incorrect capitalisation of the acronym SNMP, see my other post "Could not create instance of fetchlet : SNMP", you should also define the target with monitoring credentials, which I did.  I have allowed users to choose both SNMPv1Creds and SNMPv3Creds. The SNMPv3Creds allows you to choose and encryption algorithm of {blank}, [SHA] or [MD5] for the authPwd and privPwd parameters, it doesn't matter what you choose you will still see the exception above.  In the case of [MD5] it will start;

java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Unknown authentication algorithm : [MD5]

I eventually managed to track this bug 19081194 - SNMP CREDENTIALS UI AND FETCHLET/RECEIVELET DISAGREE ABOUT PROTOCOL NAMES, unfortunately at the time of writing I'm still waiting for a fix.
